Wisdom teeth often known as third molars are the last teeth to erupt. One usually gets them in late teens or early twenties.
Why Take Them Out?
Wisdom teeth are a third set of molars in the back of your mouth. They usually come in between the ages of 16 and 25, and they're spotted on X-rays. Most people have them removed for one of these reasons:
They do not erupt properly in occlusion. They can be trapped in your jawbone or gums, which can be painful.
They come in at the wrong angle. They may press against your adjacant teeth.
Because of evolutionary changes and change in dietary habits 3rd molars are impacted
Which might be deccayed because they are difficult to clean which results in pain and infection. You may not be able to reach your wisdom teeth with your toothbrush or dental floss.
WISDOM TOOTH REMOVAL
A detailed exam or X-rays will be done to ensure an extraction is necessary. While our teeth were meant to last forever but wisdom teeth are often not erupted fully and have no role in mastication or chewing so making them necessary to be removed or extracted . This is help in preventing further damage to your adjacant teeth. The most common reasons you might need an extraction are:
The Process of Extracting a Tooth
Step 1 : A detailed exam or X-rays will be done to ensure an extraction is necessary and plan a surgical procedure for extraction
Step 2 : The proper anesthetic will be given so that the procedure is pain-free.Usually a local anesthetic is injected to block the nerve supply of that area. After anaesthesia the area adjacent to the tooth will become numb but you’ll still be able to feel pressure.
Step 3 : After the extraction: the bleeding is arrested and sutures are placed accross the socket to fasten the healing. We’ll pack the area with gauze so that it can start the healing process.
We’ll spend some time with you and answer any questions you may have and talk about the healing process.
Healing and Home Care
Pain control : Home care after extraction can involve proper care of the wound at home, taking proper prescribed medicines which will help in relieving your pain and help in faster healing. More complex extractions may involve additional prescriptions recommended by your dentist.
Eating : Soft, cold foods are recommended for the few days after the extraction. Try to avoid using straws as the sucking motion can complicate the healing process.
Cleaning : We recommend brushing as usual and a warm, salt water rinse 24 hours after the procedure to keep the area clean. Smoking should be refrained from for 24-72 hours.
Swelling : Ice packs may help reduce any swelling. There can also be stitches involved in more complex extractions, usually self-dissolving stitches.
It’s extremely important to follow post extraction instructions to prevent any complications. For example, the blood clot that forms after extraction can become dislodged and leave the hole exposed. This situation, called dry socket, can cause an infection so we strongly recommend to follow all instructionsto ensure healing properly.
